Heat & Trail Blazers Secure First Wins Following Recent Detentions
The Miami Heat scored 86 opening half points versus the Memphis Grizzlies
The Heat earned a overwhelming 146-114 win against the Memphis Grizzlies in their initial NBA match after player Rozier was detained for alleged illegal sports betting.
Trail Blazers head coach Chauncey Billups was also detained as part of a broad FBI investigation into illegal gambling. The two individuals contest the claims.
But, the Heat were not distracted as they put up eighty-six first-half points to be ahead of Memphis by 39 at halftime, the biggest half-time advantage in the franchise's 37-year existence.
Bam Adebayo top-scored with 24 scores and afterwards said Terry had the team's full backing.
"We support him. Full support," Bam stated. "We are with him all the way. That's our brother at the end of the day."
Miami head coach Spoelstra commented: "Terry is a person who is very dear to everyone. He has made a beneficial influence on our team.
"We send our thoughts and our care for him as he faces this."
The Trail Blazers also won their first game after the detentions, with Brazil-born Tiago Splitter taking over as temporary head coach in Chauncey's non-attendance and guiding the squad to a convincing 139 to 119 win against the Warriors.
"We all had great experiences with Chauncey and how he coached," Splitter remarked. "Our thoughts are with him and his loved ones but we have a job to do."
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver 'Upset' over Recent Events
Speaking about the detentions for the first time, NBA commissioner Adam Silver stated he was "deeply disturbed" by the events of the recent days.
"Nothing is more critical to the league and supporters than the integrity of the game," he informed Amazon Prime. "Therefore I felt uneasy. It was very upsetting."
The commissioner also said an NBA investigation into Rozier's conduct in March 2023, when there was "unusual wagering" in a game he participated for the Hornets against the New Orleans Pelicans, discovered no wrongdoing.
"We were informed by the regulators and the betting companies," he continued.
"We then looked into that situation and were open regarding it. And while there was that aberrational betting, we, frankly, couldn't find anything.
"Federal authorities has legal authority... [it] can impose penalties, can take various actions that the league office can't do.
"Therefore, we've been cooperating from that point. And, of course, what they announced yesterday was an charge.
"And 30 months after, he still hasn't been convicted of anything, in fairness to Rozier.
"Clearly, it appears unfavorable, but he's been put on administrative leave, and so it is a balance in this case between protecting people's rights and investigating."
