The Boss Maresca Labels Pre-Match Time as His 'Most Difficult Two Days' with the Club
Chelsea gaffer Enzo Maresca remarked that the build-up to the weekend's triumph against Everton was "the toughest 48 hours" of his tenure with the London club.
The 44-year-old delivered a somewhat cryptic message in his post-match interview despite earning a 2-0 win at home through strikes from Cole Palmer and Malo Gusto.
Those points lifted Chelsea back into the Premier League's top four, potentially improving the atmosphere following a defeat to Atalanta in the Champions League that had extended the side's winless run to four fixtures.
Yet, when questioned about Gusto's assist and general display, Maresca unexpectedly disclosed his frustration over the preceding 48-hour period within the organization.
"How the squad want to learn has been fantastic and this is the reason why I praise them - because with so many challenges, they are excelling after a tricky week," he stated.
"Since I joined the club, the previous 48 hours have been the most difficult because several people withheld support from us."
Pressed on the specifics, the ex- Leicester City manager elaborated: "Most difficult 48 hours since I joined the club because people didn't support me and the team."
When asked if he was referring to people internally at Chelsea, he responded: "Broadly speaking. In general," before specifying when queried if it was aimed at fans or the media: "I adore the fans and we are extremely content with the fans."
Fitness & Disciplinary Crisis
Maresca also drew attention to Chelsea's persistent injury and suspension problems, noting they had been missing key forward Cole Palmer for much of the season, in addition to losing linchpin Moises Caicedo to a three-game ban and forward Liam Delap to a couple of significant injuries.
"I really praise the players and the squad because we have played 16 Premier League games, 5 of them minus Moises Caicedo, 11 of them minus Cole Palmer, almost all of them without Liam Delap," he explained.
"And this squad, no matter who is playing, they are doing fantastic. Today was 5 games in 12 days so for sure when you see Cole Palmer available, we said many times that he's our finest player but we play the vast majority of the season without our top player.
"We play five games in the Premier League minus Moises Caicedo. This is the explanation why I'm so pleased for the players and it's something that I would like people outside to acknowledge because the effort from the players is fantastic."
Chelsea's success over Everton consolidated their position in fourth in the Premier League table, with a Carabao Cup last-eight tie at Cardiff and a league journey to Newcastle scheduled next week.
Speculation Regarding Maresca's Comments
It was unclear who or what caused Maresca to label the past 48 hours as the most difficult of his spell as Chelsea head coach.
In that timeframe, the coach had traveled back with his backroom team and players from his native Italy, held a session at Cobham, faced a pre-game press briefing where he appeared at ease, and engineered a victory over an high-flying Everton side.
It was unclear whether any particular media reports had irked him, if online discourse were a factor, or if it was something deeper from within the hierarchy at Stamford Bridge.
Maresca only sought to rule out that it was an matter related to the club's fans, a section of which have not yet fully warm to him since his appointment from Leicester during July 2024.
